What is Elder Abuse?
- Neglect: Caretaker fails to provide medical care, takes walker, glasses, dentures
- Financial Exploitation: Money spent without permission
- Psychological Abuse: Abuser makes threats, abuses pets, destroys belongings of the elderly
- Sexual Abuse: Perpetrator forces sex, unwanted and degrading sexual talk
- Physical Abuse: Victims are slapped, hit, punched, choked, shoved, burned, and have bones broken.
Common Signs of Elder Abuse, Neglect and Exploitation
- Bruises, cuts and other physical injuries
- Not well groomed or bathed
- Isolation
- Malnourishment
- Sever anxiety, fearfulness, depression
- Personal belongings such as art, silverware, or jewelry are missing
- Property or savings are mismanaged
- Unpaid bills
- Caretakers or family members have problems with substance abuse, alcoholism or mental illness
How to get help
CALL 911 In an emergency or when an elderly person is in immediate danger
CALL 585-268-9319 or 585-268-9189 after 4 PM - Adult Protective Services when an elderly person:
- Is not able to care for themselves
- Is not receiving adequate care from friends or relatives
- Suffers physical abuse or financial exploitation

- Shelter from an abusive family and has nowhere to go
- Help with safety planning
- An Order of Protection
