Internship Opportunities

ACCORD Corporation offers internship opportunities to undergraduate and graduate students who desire to gain valuable work experience. ACCORD Corporation is a dynamic, highly effective non-profit community action agency that administers sustainable programs that help individuals and families achieve self-sufficiency in Allegany, Cattaraugus, and Wyoming Counties. As an intern at ACCORD, you will gain professional experiences and will be offered formal training opportunities that are tailored to meet your educational and professional goals and interests, along with the opportunity to work hands-on in your field of study.

ACCORD Corporation provides interns with the opportunity to train with people who manage the day-to-day operation and administration of programs designed to improve the living conditions within the communities we serve, and to combine their academic study with on-the-job experience.

ACCORD Corporation's Intern Policy

Interns are provided with experiential opportunities and assist the agency in meeting our mission. Student interns are not considered employees and are under no obligation to provide time, duties or resources other than what he or she chooses to freely provide. This policy applies to students ages 18 and older. Interns working directly with customers will be supervised by ACCORD staff at all times. Interns do not receive wages for service performed. If at any time, an intern fails to meet expected standards of conduct, the intern relationship will be terminated. The appropriate Division Director will make such determinations.

Internship opportunities include:

  • Accounting (Non-Profit) / Finance Learn real world fiscal operations through a hands on approach. Gain valuable exposure to non-profit accounting methods and procedures. Put your computer skills to use with Excel files and Access databases.
  • Administrative May involve preparing reports; copying, filing, and data entry; and other tasks associated with general administrative support and operations, including receptionist and secretarial tasks.
  • Affordable Property Management (Housing Programs) Work closely with tenants and landlords; provide education and support to first-time home buyers; assist with Section 8 applications and vouchers; and participate in the process of approving home improvement grants.
  • Business Development Assist aspiring entrepreneurs with business development, in strategy as well as execution, and with obtaining non-traditional lending. Support and assist the Business Development Team in identifying potential clients; help prepare presentations for clients' business promotion; provide technical assistance to customers.
  • Case Management (Youth Services) Provide support and assistance to our TASA Case Managers in an effort to decrease the risk factors and increase the protective factors associated with teenage problem behaviors such as drugs and alcohol, teen pregnancy, teen parenting, violence, crime, and school dropout. Time will primarily be divided between three areas: (1) direct field experience with middle and high school youth, (2) direct field experience with numerous community professionals on several committees and boards, (3) office work, event planning, and curricula development.
  • Computer / Technology Data entry, updating and enhancing databases, conducting computer analysis of data; website development/maintenance; computer program support.
  • Child Care and Development Supervise and assist children during all activities; participate in staff meetings, facility events, and parent gatherings; assist with developing, planning and preparing classroom activity materials; assist with creating curriculums that incorporate motor skills, social skills, and speech development activities; assist with daily logging, student incident reports, attendance records and head count; observe and document behavior and development needs of the children; ensure classroom safety, cleanliness, and appearance; help in giving directions to volunteers who come to spend time with the children.
  • Human Resources Provide superior service to both the internal and external customer; handle employee information, including data input, reports, employee records, and distribution of documents; assist with new hire paperwork and documentation; assist in the coordination and delivery of various training programs; and assist with coordination and delivery of full benefit package.
  • Human Services (Crisis and Prevention Services) Assist with all aspects of program including domestic violence, community prevention education, follow-up with victims, homeless prevention and intervention; and increase public awareness. Provide crisis intervention, advocacy, information, resources, referrals, and problem solving to individuals and their children impacted by domestic violence; provide support and assistance in preparation of family offense petitions; assist the facilitator with the educational/support group for domestic violence victims and their children.
  • Marketing / Public Relations (Community Operations) Assist with projects / presentations to enhance the customers' experience and increase awareness; assist with distributing brochures / materials and planning events; assist in ACCESS Center activities, including food distribution.
  • Youth Services Provide drug / alcohol/ pregnancy prevention activities, literacy activities including homework assistance, recreation, outreach, and assist staff with supervision of children attending program during after-school hours.

Intern Selection

Prior to beginning an internship, each candidate must submit a written letter of recommendation. The letter should be completed by a member of the community who is not a relative of the candidate and who has a relationship with the individual of two or more years. The letter should include a reason or reasons as to why the individual writing the letter believes the candidate is suitable to an internship position with ACCORD Corporation. Each potential intern will participate in an interview with the appropriate supervisor and complete a volunteer application form. Interns must provide contact information for the instructor overseeing their internship. All candidates for internships must be approved by the appropriate Division Director prior to their first day of service.

A background check is performed on all interns applying to work with children and youth under the age of 18.
