Philip Barr is a retired veteran who served in the United States Army from 2000-2004 and was awarded a Medal of Valor during the invasion of Iraq. After his time with the Army, Philip traveled and spent time outdoors. He completed a solo road trip around North America in 40 days, reaching as far as British Columbia, the Yukon, and Alaska. Upon returning to Allegany County, Philip turned his attention to maintaining the forest on his property. In early 2021 Philip decided to turn his passion into a business, forming Bigfoot Tree Care, LLC.
Each client is special, and every tree has a story. Philip seeks to provide the highest quality, science-based services to his clients. He works with landowners across the region to develop a plan to best meet the tree care needs. Philip embodies the arborist philosophy and is currently working to become a certified arborist.
As a lifelong learner, Philip signed up for the fall session of the business training course to make sure he was prepared to own a business. Over the 10-week period, Philip sharpened his business plan and won the business plan competition. When the opportunity came up to apply for the Allegany County Microenterprise grant, Philip was ready. With a limited application window, Philip submitted the application packet within hours of hearing. The Microenterprise grant will allow Philip to purchase a dump trailer and diesel pickup truck. This will improve efficiency for his business and allow him to complete larger jobs. Philip’s application was recently approved, and his business has been awarded a $30,000 grant.
